Veryfi vs AWS Textract: Which Document AI Platform Actually Protects You From Fraud?
    Summarize with:

If you’re in the fintech, banking, or CPG industry, or building an expense, AP automation, rewards or loyalty program, you often deal with high-volume document workflows where manual processing or the use of a traditional OCR tool takes more time than it should. Now imagine you’re not only racing against time but also against manipulated/AI-generated invoices, receipts, or documents, which would yield catastrophic results for your business. But there is a way to avoid that…

When dealing with a wide range of data extraction while also trying to balance fraud detection, a clear line appears between Veryfi and AWS Textract’s capabilities and differences. Both can easily handle a variety of document formats and receipts/invoices. But, when you start to look deeper into fraud, real-world usability, language support (Veryfi supports 38+ while AWS Textract only supports 6), and how fast you’re able to ship out your product (such as a rewards/loyalty program), the difference becomes far more noticeable.

    Veryfi vs AWS Textract

    Areas of Similarity

Data Extraction: Both Veryfi & AWS Textract are excellent at this function when it comes to extracting data from documents, receipts, and invoices, which are then converted into structured data (such as JSON), where both utilize their proprietary AI models.

API Integration: Both Veryfi and AWS Textract offer various APIs personalized for each specific usage, which can be easily embedded into fintech applications, expense management tools, and accounts payable systems through Veryfi’s API and AWS Textract API.

    Areas of differentiation

Comparison of what makes Veryfi and AWS Textract unique: Veryfi offers native fraud detection, Veryfi Lens mobile capture, financial document DNA with 50+ APIs, day-one readiness, and zero trust architecture. AWS Textract offers AWS ecosystem integration, universal document processing, advanced workflow agents, custom ML flexibility via SageMaker, and scalability within AWS infrastructure.

Veryfi is powered by a suite of purpose-built models, with over 50+ AI models in total. These models are each individually optimized for specific document types and use cases such as financial documents, receipts, invoices, expense workflows, bills of lading, EOBs, and the list goes on. Such a variety of use cases allows the user/client to receive far more accurate and consistent/structured outputs in JSON format which are predictable. This is a major deal when dealing with financial/fraud-sensitive-workflows.

AWS Textract, on the other hand, places much more emphasis on Deep Integration with a Sovereign Cloud Ecosystem with powerful document analysis tools. With 25+ APIs, their platform is mainly known for allowing their users/clients to process a wide variety of documents and easily integrate them with other AWS services for custom workflows. However, with all of this customization and variation, there is a significant amount of upfront setup, custom development for fraud logic, testing, and ongoing maintenance to achieve reliable and consistent outputs.

    Let’s Talk About Fraud

Anytime you’re dealing with large quantities of varying document types, your concern is no longer which platform has the best OCR capabilities or outputting structured extracted data in JSON and other formats, your concern becomes fraud related. In today’s day and age, there’s no question about it that once in a while a manipulated document will attempt to slip through unnoticed. This is where the difference becomes even clearer between Veryfi and AWS Textract. Unlike AWS Textract which doesn’t have native fraud detection capabilities, Veryfi offers high fraud detection accuracy rates due to our pre-trained models, as well as higher accuracy rates on additional document types through our proprietary VLM (Visual Language Model AnyDocs), while being day-one-ready to ship out! With AWS Textract, to match that fraud capability you must set up and provision S3 buckets, deploy AWS Lambda orchestrators, configure IAM security roles, and create SageMaker instances. It’s all doable but you will have to train your own fraud detection models which means gathering lots of fraud-related data from various sources with varying fraud types, after which you will need to continuously improve.

The Real Problem: Most Tools Only Read Documents

The majority of AI document platforms/solutions are only good at converting images into text through OCR. This is great, but it is the bare minimum in today’s tech-leading world.

But then again, when dealing with fraud, problems arise. Whenever someone attempts to cheat the system through manipulated invoice/documents/receipts, that’s where real losses begin to take place.

Now, allow me to very quickly show you how easy it is (even for a non-technical person) to cheat a simple reimbursement receipt in less than 5 minutes:

See if you can tell which one is fake and which one is real…?

    Real and Fake receipt

Anyone can be deemed a sophisticated fraudster with easy access to uncensored AI models and generate a fake receipt. Now here’s the catch! I didn’t use an uncensored model. No, instead, this was done with ChatGPT and Photoshop. ChatGPT generates a fake invoice with a clear “VOID” mark to stay within its guidelines, which I quickly removed using the “Healing Brush Tool” in Photoshop, and there you have a manipulated invoice which might slip through systems easily.

Basic extraction tools often miss these because they’re focused only on reading text instead of also verifying whether the document itself is structurally trustworthy. And even with a certain level of fraud detection capabilities, it takes a while to train a model to deal with such cases.

Veryfi: Built for Trust, Not Just Extraction

Veryfi was designed from the ground up with financial documents and fraud prevention in mind. It goes beyond just data extraction by actively verifying whether the data is fraudulent and if it can be trusted.

    Key strengths:

    • Strong native fraud detection: Veryfi has built-in tampering detection, AI-generated document detection, metadata analysis, and duplicate detection. These features work out of the box without requiring you to build or train. It judges them and, depending on the score, either approves or disapproves the document.
    • Excellent mobile capture: Veryfi Lens gives real-time guidance to users when taking photos of receipts. It’s able to dramatically improve the quality of documents before they even reach the AI (camera-lens manipulation), which leads to higher accuracy in real-world conditions.
    • Specialized in financial documents: Receipts, invoices, hotel folios, and expense-related documents are where Veryfi performs exceptionally well. It understands context and line items deeply and accurately.
    • Day-one ready: You can integrate and start getting reliable results quickly without extensive model training or custom setup.

For teams that need a strong fraud protection layer and convenient/fast API implementation, especially fintechs embedding document intelligence into their apps, the go-to choice has to be Veryfi; however, if you’re looking for a more advanced cloud solution, then AWS Textract is a great choice, but if you require fraud detection, you will need the necessary tools and resources to train your models constantly.

AWS Textract: Powerful, But You Do More of the Work

AWS Textract is an excellent tool for enterprises requiring general document processing with a solid cloud ecosystem integration. Textract allows you to extract data from a wide range of documents and offers more tools for building workflows using other AWS services (This is especially great if your business already relies on other existing AWS products).

    Where it stands out:

    • Good for teams that want general document processing across many document types and tight integration with AWS services like S3, Lambda, and Step Functions.
    • More tools for building complex post-processing logic and workflows within the AWS environment.
    • Often more cost-effective or scalable at very high volumes once integrated into existing AWS infrastructure.

However, pre-packaged fraud detection is outside its intended capabilities. AWS Textract intentionally focuses on general extraction and customization, giving you more freedom over how you integrate it into your workflow. Furthermore, the model is only limited to 6 languages; processing documents beyond that number requires manual work. If catching manipulated or AI-generated documents is a priority for your specific need, Veryfi is the better choice; however, AWS allows you to build tailor-made validation layers on top or combine it with services like Amazon Fraud Detector/Bedrock, but again, requires weeks of coding and custom AI setup, which is all bypassed if choosing Veryfi.

    Which One Should You Choose?

    Choose Veryfi if:

    • Fraud detection is a real priority for your team or customers.
    • You want strong performance on receipts and expense documents out of the box.
    • You want a dedicated mobile experience with on-device data extraction for faster, more private, and higher-quality results.
    • You’re embedding document intelligence into a fintech or expense product.
    • You want it day-one-ready and working out of the box.

    Choose AWS Textract if:

    • You have (or want to build) deep integration with other AWS services and want to stay within the AWS ecosystem.
    • You need processing for a wide variety of document types beyond just financial ones.
    • Workflow automation and agent-style processing using AWS native tools are more important than fraud protection tools.

    The Bottom Line

Both are fantastic OCR tools with so much to offer and so many differences. The question is what type of line of work you’re in. If you deal with financial documents and deal with documents that are in different languages, Veryfi is the right choice. If you’re dealing with processing a massive quantity of a variety of documents, in different languages while having all of your tools/solutions within the same ecosystem/room, then AWS takes the win.
