From Bybe to Swiftly: Scaling Receipt Processing for Alcohol Cashback with Veryfi
    Summarize with:
Our cashback rebate solution requires speed as part of the product. A shopper who uploads a receipt and waits doesn’t know if it worked, and that uncertainty kills retention. With Veryfi averaging 2.6 seconds per receipt, people redeeming that way feel instantly rewarded. That feeling keeps them coming back.

This case study looks at how Bybe, a cashback rebate app for beer, wine, and spirits, used Veryfi to process nearly 800,000 receipts with a 99.44% accuracy rate. When Bybe was acquired by Swiftly, the integration carried over and expanded into new retail campaigns.

Swiftly is a retail technology platform that connects retailers, wholesalers, and CPG brands with their shoppers. Their platform runs across 33,000+ stores and reaches 12 million shoppers nationally. The core of what they do is help retailers turn shopper data into personalized promotions, loyalty programs, and closed-loop marketing campaigns.

Bybe was a cashback rebate app focused on beer, wine, and spirits. Shoppers could earn rebates on alcohol purchases at local retailers by uploading their receipts. Simple idea, but the execution depended entirely on one thing working well: reading those receipts accurately, every time. Swiftly acquired Bybe and now runs similar campaigns under the Swiftly platform, including a partnership with Circle K.

A receipt from a liquor store is not a clean document. Some are printed on thermal paper that smears. Others are crumpled, faded, or photographed at an angle in bad lighting. No two retailers format their receipts the same way. Bybe needed software that was actually trained on receipts, not repurposed from document scanning.  That’s where the Bybe–Veryfi partnership began: building a direct integration around Veryfi’s Receipt OCR API to make accurate, automated receipt processing the foundation of the cashback experience.

What the numbers looked like for Bybe

Over the life of the partnership, Veryfi helped Bybe process 776,014 receipts. That’s close to 800,000 real submissions from shoppers claiming cashback on everyday purchases. Of those, 4,350 came back flagged as too blurry to process accurately. That’s a rejection rate of 0.56%. The other 99.44% were extracted and processed cleanly, giving Bybe’s system the structured data it needed to validate purchases and issue rebates.
No manual review queue. No human approvals sitting between a shopper and their cashback. Receipts went in, data came out.

Swiftly picks up where Bybe left off

When Swiftly acquired Bybe, they kept the Veryfi integration and expanded it into their own campaigns. The 2026 numbers for Swiftly’s current work reflect a platform that’s still growing:

    • 3,547 documents processed
    • Average processing time of 2.6 seconds (median 2.1 seconds)
    • 24.5 days of manual work saved
    • 11,278 line items extracted
    • 1,707 duplicate submissions caught

That last number is worth paying attention to. Duplicate detection is powered by Veryfi’s Fraud Detection and Prevention technology. In cashback programs, people try to submit the same receipt more than once. Catching 1,707 of those in a single campaign window protects the economics of the whole program.

Why speed matters in this context

Processing time is a familiar part of the cashback experience. A shopper who uploads a receipt and waits 30 seconds does not know if it worked. A shopper who gets near-instant confirmation feels rewarded. That feeling is what keeps people coming back. Veryfi’s models run at sub-3-second speeds because they were built specifically for receipts, not adapted from a general-purpose tool. Line-item extraction pulls individual product data rather than just totals, so reward validation can be exact. And because nothing sits in a human review queue, there are no delays between submission and confirmation.

    What comes next

Swiftly is still expanding their retail partnerships and campaigns, and the Veryfi integration is built to scale with them. Receipt extraction is the foundation, but it’s not the ceiling.
As Swiftly takes on more retail partners and more campaign types, they have access to a broader set of Veryfi capabilities that go beyond basic extraction. Fraud detection and document integrity checks can flag altered receipts and suspicious submissions before they hit the rewards queue. Line-item data at the SKU level opens up more precise validation not just did they buy alcohol, but which brand, which size, at which retailer.
